five friday confessions

  • I'm cutting Quinn's hair this weekend and I feel like I'm somehow supposed to be emotional about this, but I'm not. Not at all.
  • I didn't want Quinn's red hair to "stick" at first and was hoping it would change to blonde or brunette, but now I can't imagine it being any other color. I love my ginger baby and I want it to stay!
  • When people talk politics on Facebook it makes me really uncomfortable, but at the same time I also enjoy stirring the pot.
  • The hubs and I have developed an odd assortment of phrases between the two of us. Some examples:
    • pumpkin time - normally 10 o'clock or whenever I decide that it's time for me to go to bed before I turn back into a pumpkin
    • man nails - I tell the hubs he has man nails when they are too long and need to be cut
    • I'm a new woman - I declare I'm a new woman when I shave my legs
  • Cafeteria style restaurants make me panic. The thought of having to chose food while others pile in line behind me is just too much pressure! I like to be able to sit, look at a menu, and then tell the waitress what I'd like when she comes back to the table.

booties

After a very stressful day and a half {where we weren't sure if we'd be able to close on Friday because of a paperwork situation}, we finally moved into our new house in Spartanburg. With the help of some amazing friends, my wonderful parents, and a husband who practically pre-loaded about 80% of it all the night before, we were able to get all of our belongings into the house on Saturday.

The mess...

The stuff...

The boxes...

Good lord it's everywhere! We are quickly realizing that we might have to give up some furniture pieces because it's looking like it might not all fit! With this move we finally have all of the furniture I inherited from my grandparents' farmhouse. I didn't realize/forgot just exactly what we had. They are all beautiful pieces so figuring out how to make it work has been a challenge.

The other night the hubs and I did some rearranging in our bedroom. We now have my grandparents' matching set of chest of drawers {chests of drawers?} plus a dresser that matches my great-grandmother's mirrored vanity all in our room. As I laid in bed last night I kept thinking to myself, "that used to be the bootie drawer."

Booties

They're a memory from my childhood that seemed so normal at the time, but looking back now makes me laugh.

Whenever I would visit my grandparents' house I would always want to take my shoes off. Memere (my grandmother) would insist that if I'm not going to wear shoes then I needed to go to her dresser and pull out a pair of booties from the drawer. They were nothing more than thick fuzzy socks, some with the grippy bottoms so you couldn't slide on the hardwood floors. I always dug around for the ones without the grippies so I could "skate" around the house. She didn't want the bottoms of my socks getting dirty, hence the booties.

As I pulled open the drawer to put my own things inside, my heart fluttered a bit hoping I would see it already filled with booties.

I miss her so much.

Instead I found two pairs of lace gloves, a potpourri packet, a postcard, three pairs of white dress socks, and a palm cross from palm Sunday and I had to laugh.

Damn that woman was a pack rat.

tips and tricks: the passy

I'm linking up again with Meagan for Tips and Tricks Tuesdays for Moms. The theme seems to be swimming and swim lessons, but Quinn hasn't started yet so I don't really have any tips for that ha!

Instead I'm going to tell y'all about a little trick I figured out one day. Quinn has hit a stage that when he gets over-tired and starts crying, not much seems to comfort him. I know deep down that if I can get him to take the pacifier, it will sooth him and he will fall right asleep. The trick is getting him to stop crying long enough to start sucking on the pacifier.

After trying and trying for a good ten minutes I had a thought. If I could put something on the end of the pacifier that he would taste, maybe it would get him to stop crying and start sucking! I wet the very end and dip it in the tiniest amount of sugar. Honestly it's such a small amount you can barely see it, but when it touches his tongue the sweetness distracts him just enough so he'll take the passy and finally calm down.

I've even carried a couple of restaurant style packets of sugar in my purse so I can perform this trick on the go. Works like a charm!

five friday confessions

  • I've always been paranoid about being the "new annoying girl who tries too hard" and with all of the new situations going on {new job, new town, new people} I'm constantly beating myself up over what I say and do and imagine everyone is judging me.
  • I keep eating dessert-like things for breakfast {really in addition to my breakfast because I eat that too}. Oatmeal cream pie with my coffee? Sure, why not! It starts with the word oatmeal...
  • I have lost all interest in decorating the new house now. All of a sudden it feels so... overwhelming.
  • I keep stalking groupon and livingsocial for another deal on pictures. I really want to have 9 month pictures taken of Quinn and you just can't beat their $18 package specials!
  • I want to start planning Quinn's first birthday party. Yes, I'm that mom.

Quinn is eight months old

Dear Quinn,

We have survived another month ha! With all of the changes going on around you, you have done wonderfully and adapted quite well. This Friday will be another big change as we move into our new house {and get you back in your own nursery}!

You must be a growing boy because we've added another round of solids after your 9 o'clock bottle. We added blueberries, strawberries, pineapple, and mango to your food list. Mama really needs to start balancing out all of the fruit with some veggies! The plan is to try roasted cauliflower and green beans next.

We introduced you to Gerber puffs and while you weren't sure at first, they are quickly becoming your favorite. I think you like they way they seem to melt in your mouth. We are still working on you being able to pick them up and put them in your mouth on your own, but you are very very close!

Same clothes size as last month although you certainly look bigger to me. You are on the medium snap length in your cloth diapers with two snap rows open around your tummy. The diapers have been going just fine and I'm happy to report no extreme blowouts or diaper rashes! More and more of mama and daddy's friends are going to use cloth diapers on their babies. You are a trend setter little boy!

Your bedtime is still 8 o'clock and you sleep until 6:30-7 in the morning. You take one really good nap after your 12 o'clock feeding and normally don't wake up until your 3 o'clock feeding. This makes it a little hard to go do things because most of our friends would love to see you in the afternoons, but I know you are much happier when you get your nap so we do our best to make sure you can sleep the whole time.

You are so close to crawling! You have started to army crawl a bit and something that I can only describe as doing the worm. You push up on your hands and rock up and down trying to scoot closer to whatever toy is out of your reach. Daddy has been out of town this past week and he told me you aren't allowed to crawl without him there to see so hold off just a little while longer!

The days of sitting in the bumbo are numbered! You have taught yourself to dig in your heals and move the entire bumbo backwards. I'm not sure where you think you're going, but you want to get there by any means possible! Once we get into the new house, dinner time will be in your high chair instead. You shouldn't be able to get into too much trouble there ha!

The kitties have finally realized you aren't going anywhere. Both Sophia and Waldo have even let you "pet" them before. They will walk up next to you and you grab their fur haha. I make sure you are gentle though. I'm sure they'd like to snuggle next to you in your crib if I let them!

Daddy and I love you to the moon and back. You are such a blessing in our lives.

Love,
Mama

what's the 411?

Today I decided to link up with From Mrs. to Mama for a little blogging 411. She came up with a list of fun questions for us to answer. Feel free to link up and play along!

1. How long have you been blogging? And what got you started on blogging? Has your blog changed?
I started blogging at the end of 2008. A friend of mine introduced me to a blog called Blue-Eyed Bride and I became hooked. I guess my blog has changed in the fact that I am now a mama so most would consider my blog a "mommy blog." Truthfully, I'm still trying to figure out what I want my blog to be.

2. Did you go to college? If so where, and what did you study?
I went to Clemson and received a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Communications, which basically boils down to: I have a degree in printing. Clemson is where I met the hubs, first through Tiger Band and then later we realized we were both GC majors. I call him a print nerd because, well, he is one. He calls our degree smearing pretty chemicals on crushed trees. See - total nerd.

3. Where have you traveled?
The only time I went out of the country was on a spring break trip to Cabo with my girl friend Candie. Good Lord that was an adventure. Remind me to tell y'all the story some time.

Otherwise my travel has all been in the states including:
numerous trips to New Hampshire camping with my family {I miss Moose Hillock Campground} {possibly Vermont as well?}
Hershey Park in PA
different beaches in South Carolina
the mountains of NC as well as New Bern to visit the hubs' family
trips to Florida to visit my aunt and uncle along with a couple bowl trips for Tiger band
Kentucky for a bowl trip
Vegas for our honeymoon
a road trip {by myself} to Dallas for a summer internship
Lynchburg, VA to visit the hubs family
Fort Wayne, IN when the hubs {briefly} resided there {we were only dating at the time}
the bestie lives outside of Atlanta
Charlotte for a couple of trips to the airport and to watch my very first All Star Nascar race
{I'm sure they might be a couple places I'm missing, but that's enough of a list}

4. If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would buy?
Obviously I would plan to pay off all of our debt first, but the first thing I would buy would be a beach house on Isle of Palms. It's on my 30 before 30 list but if I won the lottery I'd definitely be picking something a bit fancier if you will.

5. What are your 3 biggest pet peeves?
Oh I like this one! One: leaving the toilet lid up! Not just the toilet seat, the actual cover. Hate. Two: When someone says 'cent' instead of 'cents'. It would be one cent or fifty cents, not fifty cent {he's a rapper} {cringe}. Three: The hubs' basket. Good gracious I wish I had never given him that thing in the first place. I let him have a basket to put his wallet, sunglasses, and keys. It is always overflowing with junk!

6. What is your favorite movie?
Don't laugh but Pillow Talk with Dorris Day has to be one of my all time favorites. It's the original You've Got Mail. I also love White Christmas. I'm a sucker for old movies that include song and dance.

7. What is your drink of choice; wine, beer, or liquor. Or Water, Soda, Tea?
I would have to say wine, but I'm really only a social drinker. My everyday drink would be water.

8. What is something you enjoy to do when you have me time?

Gosh I haven't had me time is such a while. I love to do crafty things. I scrapbook, sew, and have an embroidery machine. It feels so rewarding to make it myself.

9. If you could have a $10,000 shopping spree to one store, which store would it be?

This may seem silly, but I would have to say Belk. It's a department store but it's my favorite. Great cloths, pretty home goods, cute baby things. I would be able to get a little bit of everything!

10. Share with us an embarrassing moment of your past? Or present.

Oh my. I'll tell y'all one of my husband's favorites.

We were driving from Columbia to Clemson for a football weekend I'm sure and we passed a gas station that had their pricing sign way up high in the air so you can see it from the interstate. I kept staring at it as it came closer and closer and then said out loud, "Gee they really can't decide which price to put up on their sign. The price keeps changing!" The hubs just looked at me in disbelieve.

It was one of those signs that flashes back and forth for the cash price and the credit price. Oops. Now he loves to point out every flashing sign and declare, "Gee they can't make up their mind!"

11. What day would you love to relive again?

I would love to relive a certain day at band practice my senior year in high school. My coach was awful {he was later fired} and giving me a particularly hard time that day. I just wish I had told him where to shove it and left. We ended up having an awful season, not even qualifying for state, so I felt like it was a huge waste of time to be so miserable.

12. If your life was turned into a movie... what actor would play you?

This one is tough. Can I say Emma Stone just because I think she's really pretty?

13. What are the jobs you had in high school/college/the early years?

In high school I worked at Food Lion as a cashier for about two weeks, in a sandwich shop called Jo-Jo's Deli, at a Blimpie/TCBY counter in a gas station, and at American Eagle in the mall. I was very fortunate that I never had to work during college except for my two mandatory internships.

14. Show us a picture from high school or college.

Our house is currently all packed ready for the move this Friday, so I don't have any high school photos available. Y'all will have to accept this picture from my freshman year in college instead.

15. If you could travel anywhere in the world, all expenses paid, where would you go?

As cliche as it sounds, Paris. It looks so dreamy in pictures.

16. Show us the most current picture of you or you and your family.

17. Where do you see your life 5 years from now?

I see us as a family of four living out our day to day. I really don't have any career goals so I'll be in the same job and we'll be in the same house. Nothing too exciting, just happy.
